It has been a good winter; got some cold, got some snow and got a break. But now the freezing season is over which means that the City of Calgary - and East Village in particular - is moving forward to the Construction Season. And it is moving fast!

There was much discussion as to whether an older bridge should be used, where the ideal location would be and whether the bridge should even be constructed. Here are the answers according to Neil MacKimmie, Senior Development Manager at Calgary Municipal Land Corporation: The bridge will be a brand new creation and not a re-purposed older bridge; the reason behind this decision is that bridges are usually built with very specific location and use in mind, which makes them less-than-optimal for any other goals.

The bridge will connect the two communities just off the junction of the Elbow and Bow Rivers, limiting the effect on nature to two trees that will have to be cut down. Mr. MacKimmie and CMLC are expecting the Elbow River Traverse to be opened in the Summer of 2014.

But the Elbow River Traverse is merely one of the ways construction season is manifesting itself; recommencing the redevelopment of Fort Calgary is another way.

Current construction is of the new, additional entrance to the Fort, located on the SW corner of the land. Completion of the entire project is scheduled for 2015.
